Our Specialties
At Highlands, we are committed to providing comprehensive, advanced care to support your health journey. Our range of specialized services ensures you receive the highest quality testing and treatment tailored to your needs.
Medical Oncology/HEMATOLOGY
Medical oncology specializes in diagnosing and treating cancers of all types, using medications rather than surgery or radiation. These treatments may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy, among others.
A Medical oncologist will act as the primary care doctor and strategist for a patient’s cancer treatment.
Radiation Therapy
Individualized treatment to destroy cancer
At Highlands Oncology, we offer highly precise and personalized radiation therapy to target and destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. Unlike systemic treatments, our radiation approach is targeted only to the affected area, minimizing whole-body exposure.
Your journey begins with a consultation where our Radiation Oncologist will discuss your unique history, tailor a specific treatment plan, and review what to expect. This is followed by a planning CT scan to ensure pinpoint accuracy.
We are committed to providing you with expert care designed to meet your individual needs at every step.
Surgical Oncology
Expert, Multidisciplinary Surgical Management of Cancer
Surgical oncology is the branch of medicine focused on the surgical management of cancer. A surgical oncologist specializes in diagnosing, staging, and treating cancer through surgery. Their primary goal is to remove tumors or cancerous tissue while preserving as much normal function as possible.
SUPPORTIVE CARE
Needs-Based Care at Every Stage of Illness
At Highlands, we use the term “Supportive Care” instead of Palliative Care, as it best describes this branch of our medical team. Highlands has a team of two Supportive Care physicians, and two advanced practice nurses that are part of our multidisciplinary clinic.
Supportive Care while similar to palliative care, is based on the needs of the patient, not on the patient’s prognosis.
Supportive Care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and it can be provided along with curative treatment. Palliative Care is typically known as end-of-life care.
MULTI-SPECIALTY CLINICS & CONFERENCES
A multidisciplinary approach to healthcare is a comprehensive approach to a patient’s care that involves more than one specialty physician. In a multidisciplinary setting, physicians of different specialties come together to diagnose and treat patients.
Having multiple specialty physicians in one place at one time allows them to collaborate real-time and develop comprehensive, personalized patient plans.
Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine plays an important role within the multispecialty care team at Highlands. While Dr. Calcagni does not treat cancer directly, she provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing treatment side effects as well as a wide range of non-cancer–related medical concerns. With the addition of Internal Medicine support, Highlands is able to reduce unnecessary hospital visits and offer patients faster, more coordinated care.
